As a PM, What are Some Resources and Tools I Can Use to Help Develop My Team?

Ask Angela PM

"Dear Angela, as a PM, what are some resources and tools I can use to help develop my team?"

Wow, that’s a BIG question. I’d need to ask you some things to get down to the perfect response but since I can’t do that, I’ll make some assumptions.

Let’s assume you work at a Fortune 500 company and have just inherited a team of PM’s that you’ve heard from your peers are not performing well:

1. Your company is most likely going to have resources they want you to use. Be sure you tap into those.
2. Set up your own tracking system of who is training on what and how they did. This could be something as simple as a spreadsheet. Or your company may also have something already built for you to use.

Now let’s go another way, let’s assume you work for yourself and are bring in a new staff member and want to build up their skills:

1. There are many online training sites like Lynda.com and skillsoft.com that offer training classes on things like Leadership Skills and Writing Skills.
2. Assuming your trying to develop your Project Manager, check out PMI.org. They have a wealth of information including Tools & Templates that can be super helpful.

In the long run though, developing your team comes down to giving them opportunities to learn and then practice those skills. Let one of your junior team members shadow a senior member during a project. Then switch and let the junior run a project with the senior overseeing. It takes time. Each project is generally somewhat different and new things come up all the time. It’s a constant process and one that should be taken seriously. If you do, you’ll have a team that respects you and wants to excel!
