We had a manager of a company's PMO in the Office Hours session who wanted information two-fold. First, she had a group of very respectful Project Managers who wanted to look at resource allocation first before assigning resources to their project. Secondly, she wanted to see the wide view of "sure, my people are busy now, but when do all these green and red bars start to die down and look empty?"
This team was super-close on their own because they knew that the needed Resource Allocation report. They also knew that there had to be a better way than moving the scroll bar over, and over, and over until getting to the open spaces.
Wes's Suggestion: Take the wide angle view of the Resource Allocation Report
Select Dynamic Dates for the next quarter or select Specific Dates for today until the end of the year (whichever you prefer)
Then select "Other Report Options" and see the four check boxes on the right side: You can choose Daily, Weekly, or Monthly columns to make your data more meaningful
Wes recommended looking at the next quarter by week to see when the schedules will start to free up
Try it for yourself to see that wide angle view of Resource Allocation. I'm curious to see if this helps your team visualize what your next month, quarter, half-year looks like.
It's questions like this that make me so happy to be a part of Project Insight. This is an example of teams seeing the value of planning out their initiatives and being respectful of each other's schedules.
Tell me what you think. Is this a plausible expectation of project managers to plan their projects around their team member's availability? Comments, comments, comments!! Lay 'em on me!
