Project Management 101

If your team is like many of our new cusomers at Project Insight, then you have team members of mixed experience levels. Some might have PMP certifications, others might be completely new to project management. We offer Project Management 101 courses to help get your team on the same page, grounding them in a common vocabulary, concepts and methodologies.

If your team is new to project management and you would like to give everyone a solid foundation, then PM 101 is for you. This one day course offers an overview of the Project Management Institutes' PMBOK® Guide and key project management principles and concepts. Attendees have an opportunity to utilize these new tools through class participation exercises.

PM 101 Course Objectives

An introductory course for project managers and team members which introduces them to the building blocks of the PMBOK® Guide and Standards and a common understanding of basic PMBOK® terminology for improved communication and project management effectiveness.

  • PMI and the PMBOK® framework including project phases, knowledge areas and process groups
  • Scope management and the development of a project charter and work breakdown structure which will include all project requirements and objectives
  • Time management and the development of a project schedule using simple estimating techniques
  • Cost management and the development of a project budget using simple estimating techniques
  • Basic earned value to assist students in understanding the principles associated with managing a project day-by-day
  • An end-of-course evaluation assessment to confirm course objectives

Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) Basics

If you need help developing your project template or templates, then this session is a good fit. This course focuses on project teams that need assistance in creating or refining their formal business process through creating a WBS template of their projects. The course is tailored to individuals who may have little or no formal training in project management. This 8-hour course provides the participant with the ability to sharpen their skills on developing work breakdown structures through the use of lectures and course exercises.

This course teaches project managers to improve their ability to facilitate a work breakdown session with their team members and customers. Course attendees should be familiar with the PMI® PMBOK® Guide and the process of developing a work breakdown structure.
